The Great Depression in Louisville is also well-known for its many ghost stories and legends. One such legend has to do with the death of jazz musician Sam Hosey.
There is more to this interesting history than just a famous entrepreneur. There is a story about Hosey that is fascinating in itself. His story goes back to the very beginnings of this city and the place it has come to be today. After he was discharged from the navy during World War Two, he went to work for a manufacturer but was fired when the company began to use Chinese immigrants as workers.
As the months wore on, his depression deepened as he missed his wife and children. He had to give up his job and move back to Kansas City where his mother lived. He continued to listen to jazz music but was unable to find work. He eventually ended up in Chicago where he was hired by what was then the Great Midwest Jazz Record label.
In those days there were not many record stores in Chicago. Chicago was the industrial heart of the country and it was here that Sam Hosey would meet Count Basie. Count Basie was an established jazz singer and pianist who had formed his own band. Hosey helped to provide the blues-based jazz that was so important to Basie. Together they created what was to become known as "jazz music" and this made Hosey a superstar.
There is an interesting story about how he reached this status. It appears that Hosey was so popular in Chicago that his friends tried to get him signed to the biggest record label in the country, RCA. They would have paid him millions but instead, Hosey decided to move to New York and pursue his recording career with another label. But by this time he was recognized by everybody and began to receive many offers from various labels.
Sam Hosey was born in Louisville Kentucky and he enjoyed a long and successful career playing both the piano and the harmonica. He is best known for his recordings of jazz standards such as "White Man's Man", "Mystic Nocturne" and "God Save The World". Sam Hosey passed away in 1977 at the age of 51. Many people are still familiar with some of his greatest works and if you are looking for some great music you should definitely check out some of his records. You will hear what an accomplished pianist he was and just how well he played the piano.
